The eve of the inauguration coincides with the discovery of what looks to be a terrible human sacrifice. Cicero is championed for having channelled his energies into defending the rule of law and republican values from the attacks of malcontent aristocrats and would-be military dictators. So the show is essentially a diptych. Our hero is not quite so adept at neutralising the cagey power behind Catiline, the ambitious general, Julius Caesar. He ages before our eyes with great subtlety. Not so much providing new insights into our own age as diminishing the events in Rome. And not needed given the wide-ranging applicability suggested by the magnificent performances of the principals. Joe Dixon is disturbingly enraged as Catiline and then magnetically wild and dangerous as Antony. Oliver Johnstone is unnervingly contained and watchful as Octavian, completely convinced of his own own deity. You get some bracingly fresh perspectives on some familiar material.

They were happy to answer any questions, and were equally happy to contribute both interesting and amusing stories. Oh, and also you get to wear an Underground High-Vis vest. In rare open house form, every person who visited was given a 35 guide book which detailed every fact you could ever need or want to know about Stratford Market depot, including a very good history of the site.

We also were given a goody bag with a lovely mug and pen set from Stratford Market! Below are some photos of the experience. The site of the depot had remains dating back to Roman Farms and Saxon ditches. Some of the remains are still reportedly carefully covered up on site. The next time in history that the site pops up is in the s, when the North Woolwich Railway was built, and then in the Stratford Market was established and remained in situ until
